So, what’s new — and where have I been? Behind the scenes, I’ve been working on something exciting: a podcast version of Ask A Tech to go alongside the column.
As part of this update, Ask A Tech is shifting to a monthly release cycle. Each edition will appear across all MMG publications and will now line up with the podcast release —giving you both print and audio versions every month.
Ok, so for some of our more mature readers who may not be familiar with the term — a podcast is basically an audio version of the column that you can listen to on the device of your choice. Think of it like a modern radio show, but you don’t have to tune in at a specific time. You can play it whenever it suits you — whether that's on your phone, computer or tablet.
It’s perfect for listening while you’re going for a walk, relaxing at home or even while doing chores. Just hit play, and you’re good to go!
As technology continues to evolve, McPherson Media Group is exploring ways to expand how we share stories and insights — including through podcasts.
We’re planning to roll out more podcast content across our publications to complement what you read in print and online.
To put this in perspective, at the time of writing, about 9.2 million Australians listen to podcasts each month — a number that’s steadily growing. It's a sign that audio content is becoming a key part of how people stay informed and entertained.
Now, on to the Ask A Tech podcast — what can you expect?
If you’ve followed the column over the years, don’t worry — you’ll still get everything you enjoy, but with the podcast, there’s more. While the column has space limits, the podcast gives me room to expand, share extra insights and dig deeper into the topics I’m covering. It’s a chance to go beyond the page and have more of a conversation around tech.
In the first episode, I’ll take you through my journey into the world of tech — starting from the early days fixing computers for friends and family, to landing my first IT job at an internet service provider, and eventually becoming a network, systems and security administrator.
I’ll also introduce my partner in crime, Molly — my digital AI co-host. Since this podcast is all about technology, I wanted to bring that theme to life. Molly is powered by two AI technologies: ChatGPT for her smarts, and a separate voice platform that gives her a natural-sounding Australian accent — so she doesn’t sound like your typical robot.
As a bonus for podcast listeners, starting from Episode 2, I’m adding a special segment at the end of each show called Don’t Click That Link.
Ever wondered what really happens when you click a shady link, reply to a suspicious email, or open a dodgy attachment? In this segment, I’ll do it — so you don’t have to.
MMG receives plenty of spam and malicious emails, and I’ve been digging through the logs to find the most interesting examples. I’ll investigate the tactics scammers use and break them down in the podcast. This content is exclusive to the podcast — you won’t find it in print or on our websites.
And it doesn’t stop with email. I’ve set up social media accounts designed to attract scammers. The goal is education — the more we all understand the tricks, the better we can protect ourselves.
Right now, I’m already deep into a fake romance and inheritance scam with one of my decoy personas. I’m documenting the whole journey — from the first message to when they start asking for money — so we can explore their tactics in real time.
And yes, I’m opening those links... in a strictly controlled environment. Never try this at home. I take the risks so you don’t have to.
