The group is made up of Baptist Pastors from around Victoria and three facilitators. The purpose of the group is to support and encourage each other to be growing leaders in our churches.
We have recognised leaders in various fields who come to share their experiences and expertise.
At one of our gatherings we had a well-known guest who has led churches, been involved in politics, a social justice campaigner, author, speaker, and a chief executive of a large aid organisation.
During a question time, he was asked: what are some of the challenges facing our society and churches today? How can the church connect with society and bring the hope of Jesus? I found the answers insightful and challenging.
Our guest thought for a minute and said the two greatest challenges we are facing right now in society and church are loneliness and anxiety.
There are so many people who are disconnected from the circles they move in. People seem to be experiencing anxiety in growing numbers.
Loneliness and anxiety. Can the church bring hope to people who are lonely and anxious? I believe the church is a place where people can find connection and peace from anxiety.
Let’s start with loneliness. Even in a crowd, people can feel lonely. Relationships break down. People isolate themselves, and just feel like they don’t belong.
In answer to loneliness, the bible paints a picture of belonging with God and to each other. The church is referred to as the people of God, Jesus is the head of the church, and we are the body of Christ.
The church has purpose for every believer. One of my favourite sayings is where Luke refers to the people of God as the fellowship of believers. We can belong to something greater.
Working with God and His people, we have an opportunity to overcome loneliness. As we work together sharing God’s purposes with people, we find friends and a family with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We don’t have to be lonely.
What about anxiety? Jesus said in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Jesus wants you to have a fulfilling life.
The Apostle Paul said in Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
God’s desire is that we not be ruled by anxiety or loneliness.
