Picola falters against Demons

Hayden Brown was Picola’s leading goal kicker against Jerilderie.

After a dream start to the season Picola United fell for the first time in Picola District Football League, defeated by Jerilderie at home in round six.

The Blues had their moments of ascendancy, particularly in the first half where they held a narrow edge.

Jerilderie had a nose in front after the first period, leading by a point, 20-19, but the Blues’ shots sailed more truly in the second and Picola had a 5.3 (33) to 4.6 (30) lead at the main break.

In a low-coring third quarter, the Demons found the more concrete scoring opportunities, converting 2.0 to the Blues 0.2 to get back into the lead 42-35.

Both sides picked up offensively for the final term, but with the game in the balance, Jerilderie held together better to escape a 68-55 winner.

Picola relied on Hayden Brown in front of goal as he led his side with three majors, while Sean Solar managed two.

Ruck Tanner Smith was the Blues’ best.

Picola’s first defeat wasn’t too impactful on the side’s table position, still sitting in third place behind the two unbeaten leaders Waaia and Katandra.

The side will look to get back on track against the middle of the road Deniliquin Rovers (3-2) this weekend, when the two clubs clash at Memorial Park at Deniliquin.
