The 51-year-old allegedly sent more than $90,000 in an attempt to bribe officials in Bangladesh and stop police linking him to the death of the woman, understood to be his wife.
The Queensland man is the first person to be charged with foreign bribery of a public official for personal advantage, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years.
Australian Federal Police began an investigation in September 2024 after a missing person's report was lodged with Queensland Police regarding the woman.
A day later, police in Bangladesh located her body and her cause of death was deemed suspicious.
The woman was an Australian-Bangladeshi dual national.
AFP began investigating the death due to the woman's citizenship status, seizing international transaction records from banks in Sydney and Brisbane.
The man allegedly sent multiple transfers totalling more than $90,000 over two years to a number of people known to him in Bangladesh.
He is also accused of providing instructions to the people to use the money to bribe officials to influence the probe, including the removal of his name from police records.
"There was some suggestion that part of the payments were intended for police," AFP Commander Stephen Jay said in Brisbane on Tuesday.
"I would like to emphasise the material we have obtained indicates the alleged attempts to influence the criminal investigation in Bangladesh were not successful.
"We have not seen any change in relation to the support provided to us by Bangladesh police - we remain really comfortable with the excellent co-operation we've had from Bangladesh authorities." Â
The man became the first in Australia to be charged with the offence after Commonwealth laws were strengthened in 2024, Commander Jay said.
AFP are also able to charge people with harming an Australian overseas.
However Commander Jay said AFP and Bangladesh police's investigations into the suspicious death were ongoing.
The man was arrested after raids were carried out at homes southwest of Brisbane on Monday.
Several electronic devices were seized at a Redbank Plains home.
Police also searched the Goodna home of the man's friend where the 51-year-old was arrested and charged.
He said the AFP's suspicious death investigation would continue "at speed".
"They are committed today as they were two years ago ... to provide the answers that the victim's loved ones are seeking," he said.
"At the centre of this matter is the tragic death of a woman and our thoughts remain with her family and friends as they continue to seek answers."
The Redbank Plains man was set to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday but it was adjourned until Wednesday.
