Cody Walker lives out ‘surreal’ premiership dream with Echuca

Ahead of a projected star AFL career, likely as a father-son with Carlton, there was one final box Walker wanted to check before it began.

To win a flag with the Murray Bombers.

Seamlessly slotting in on the wing, Walker produced classy skills that showed he is more than ready to make the leap to the top flight.

But, as Walker admits, he couldn’t have cared less about the stats, so long as he tasted the country footy glory Walker generations had before him.

“It’s super surreal,” Walker said.

“I didn’t think I was going to play two weeks ago.

“To get the call up to play, for three generations in my family to win a premiership in senior footy at Echuca is pretty special.

“It means so much to me and my family, just the club alone have helped my family through so much.

“This is my way to give back in some sense of a way, but I’ll be back one day.”

Walker said his dream of an Echuca flag was raised in pre-season, with hopes despite his commitments to Talent League and the AFL National Academy that he could take the field for the Murray Bombers on September 20.

“I was certain at the start of the year when I started doing pre-season with Echuca and Carlton, I told them that I’d try and get back and win a flag with the Echuca boys.

“It’s something I’m super proud about and really thankful.”

To hear his name called out on AFL draft night in November will be the pinnacle of Walker’s draft journey, but as on-field results are concerned, this was the fairytale result.

Even more so, after Walker kicked a dagger of a goal in the right pocket in the last quarter to give Echuca supporters one last moment to remember with Walker in bottle green.

“I always wanted one today and it wasn’t a bad goal either,” Walker said with a smile.

“So yeah, I was pretty happy about it.”
