United was held goalless in the first half and trailed by 28 points at the main break, but kicked eight goals to Jerilderie’s three after half-time to clinch a memorable 8.10 (58) to 7.8 (50) win.
With four wins on the trot and now sitting fourth on the ladder, Blues coach Darby Walsh said his side was in a good spot so far this season.
“Four wins in a row, obviously it’s a really good position to be in,” Walsh said. “4-1 to start the season is a really good look for us.
“We’ve begun to set our season up well, but there are a few more boxes to tick before we’re really happy with where we are at.”
The Blues got off to a slow start on Saturday, with Walsh saying his side’s skills let them down in the first half, allowing Jerilderie to build a solid lead by half-time.
“It was a pretty scrappy game, to be honest, skills were pretty poor from both teams,” Walsh said.
“Their decision-making was better in the first half and they were able to capitalise on that, whereas ours was the reason I think we weren’t able to play well in the first half.
“Our skills let us down. We were slipping tackles and missing basic kicks, we didn’t give our forwards any real opportunity to hit the scoreboard in a big way.”
Despite being down by five goals at half-time, Walsh said his side knew it could get back into the contest.
“We knew that once we tidied up our skills, once we started sticking our tackles and really bring the pressure we knew it would turn around and come back to us, and that’s exactly what we saw happen in that third quarter,” he said.
“The skills from the second quarter to the third lifted dramatically, and how we were bring the ball into our forward 50 really improved as well.”
United’s second-half turnaround saw them outscore Jerilderie 52-16 over the last two quarters, powering them to a memorable victory.
Walsh said Cody Haub, Mitchell Heggart and Blake Jorgensen were three of the top players for United on the weekend.
“Cody Haubb was really good all day, he was giving us a target all day and playing really good football,” Walsh said.
“In the second half Mitch really shone and stepped up when we needed him to, and Blake played a really strong game.”
Haub booted three goals for the Blues and Talyor Beard kicked two, while Brad Aylett and Mitchell Conlan had two goals each for Jerilderie.
