Year 4-6 students from Echuca Primary, River City Christian College, St Mary’s Echuca and Twin Rivers Primary School participated on Sunday, June 23 with the hopes of moving onto the next stage of the competition, the Regional final.
Meaghan Gould of St Mary’s Echuca took out top prize for the Years 3 to 4 section and Emma Kervin of Twin Rivers Primary School won the Years 5 to 6 section.
Echuca Lions junior speaking competition organiser John Simson said the night is an important one on the Lion’s and school’s calendars.
‘‘It’s a great night, the kids seem to thoroughly enjoy it,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s vital because it encourages the students and gives them confidence and I think that’s why the teachers push for the event to happen every year.’’
Competitors in the Years 3 and 4 section were judged on a 3 minute speech on a subject previously advised to them. The Years 5 and 6 students were to give a 4 minute speech plus a one minute impromptu speech on a surprise topic.
They were judged on presentation, content and delivery which included eye contact, use of voice, gestures and confidence.
The Lions Club would like to thank the four schools for getting their students involved and to Echuca College for allowing the club to use their facilities as well as assistant principal Cathy Kervin for opening proceedings.
Both winners are now set to compete in the Regional final to be held Sunday, August 4 in Girgarre.
