Senior Constable Bren Lodi of Campaspe Highway Patrol said a Moama man in his 50s was driving his 4WD ute north on the Northern Hwy, opposite Caltex, when he smashed into the back of a Ford Territory about 12.30pm.
‘‘He was not concentrating and following too close behind and when the Ford Territory slowed down for traffic, he collided into the rear of it,’’ he said.
‘‘There was heavy traffic leading up to the roundabout so it was low level speed but it doesn’t appear he was braking when he hit the vehicle.’’
Echuca Ambulance Service took the Echuca girls, aged under 10, accompanied by their mother, to Echuca hospital as a precaution.
The ute was extensively damaged and had to be towed from the scene, while the Ford only sustained minor damage.
The man was issued with a penalty notice for following too close.
The collision has prompted police to issue a safety warning to motorists.
‘‘This accident happened because of inattention,’’ Snr Constable Lodi said.
‘‘People need to concentrate on the road when they’re driving and give it their full attention. Especially now there is more traffic on the road during school holidays and peak periods.’’
