THE Tongala Community Events group has been forced to cancel the town’s 2020 garage sale due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The group's president Sue Duggan confirmed the decision in a post on the its Facebook page.
“After long and careful consideration, the executive committee have decided that in the best interest of everybody, that the town's 2020 garage sale be deferred until 2021,” the post said.
“This decision has not been made lightly.
“As we now face an extended `state of emergency’ situation, until at the very earliest June 21, along with the uncertainty surrounding a possible future second wave and/or lock-down/isolation, it is impossible to know what the situation will be in the coming months.
“Even if the restrictions were completely lifted self-distancing will be part of our `norm'.
“I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I believe for everyone's safety and good health, wellness comes first, and the decision to defer this year's garage sale is one which could not be ignored.
“Life still goes on and our committee is still active.”
Reasons for cancelling this year’s garage sale included the town’s ageing population, individual financial situations and insurance commitments.
