Port retaining wall works on track

CAMPASPE Shire Council said work on the retaining wall overlooked by the pop-up park at the Port is on track.

Construction on the wall was expected to start in March 2019; however, permits to build on the historic site took longer than anticipated.

But council said once the project went out to tender earlier this year it had been relatively smooth sailing.

“Works are progressing well. The first section of wall is in and the supports to brace the wall are about to be installed,” infrastructure services general manager Jason Deller said.

“With works currently on track, we anticipate a completion date to be mid to late August.”

The site has been the topic of significant debate, which led to the decision to knock down the former Oscar W’s restaurant in June 2018 and establish a temporary pop-up park while council consulted with the community about the future of the area.

The new retaining wall will be a concrete and steel structure clad with timber fascia boards to maintain the historical appearance of the Port.
