Echuca man escapes burning car at Bamawm Extension

AN ECHUCA man was lucky to escape injury after his vehicle burst into flames at Bamawm Extension last week.

Bamawm Extension Fire Brigade’s George Calleja said the man, believed to be in his late 40s, was driving a refrigeration transit van along Echuca-Mitiamo Rd when he saw smoke coming from the engine about 9.45am on Friday, March 12.‘‘He pulled over and the whole car lit up,’’ he said.

CFA tankers from Kotta, Echuca and Bamawm Extension arrived soon after but the vehicle was fully alight.

‘‘Someone had called 000 as they saw the car smoking and we only took a few minutes to get there, but it was too late,’’ Mr Calleja said.

‘‘It was on a channel bank, so the fire spread to the grass and scrub and burnt an area of about 30m by 5m.

‘‘We had both fires under control in about 20 minutes.’’

The car was towed from the scene.
