Campaspe Shire Council and Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation (YYNAC) have released a joint statement announcing works can continue at the site following an extensive cultural heritage assessment.
In February, The Riv reported the sporting precinct was temporarily declared a crime scene after the discovery of human remains.
It was later confirmed these remains were historical, and works at the site were indefinitely suspended while cultural heritage assessments were made with YYNAC.
In a joint statement released on Tuesday, July 21, the two organisations said the assessment process had informed the next stage of the project.
A YYNAC supervisor will remain on-site to provide cultural oversight and ensure compliance throughout the remaining construction process.
Council has assured the community the project remains fully funded, with costs associated with the assessment process accommodated within existing project contingencies.
The Federal Government has contributed $11.3 million through its Growing Regions Program, while the council has committed $2 million to the project.
“Both organisations recognise the significance of the discoveries made at Victoria Park and the importance of protecting and respecting cultural heritage,” the statement said.
“The collaborative approach taken throughout this process demonstrates a shared commitment to balancing cultural heritage responsibilities with community infrastructure needs.”
Both organisations acknowledged that while the pause created uncertainty for local sporting clubs, user groups and the wider community, they "remain committed to delivering the project" and thanked stakeholders for their patience and understanding while the assessment was completed.
Campaspe Shire Council and YYNAC will continue their partnership as construction moves forward — ensuring cultural heritage is appropriately managed and protected while delivering upgraded facilities for future generations.
Works to redevelop Victoria Park began in October 2025, with construction originally scheduled to be completed by December 2026.
The redevelopment will include a state-of-the-art community hub, along with a new grandstand and change rooms.
The redeveloped community hub will also act as an emergency relief centre.
