The exhibition will feature 59 finalist works, including the winning portrait by Melbourne-based artist Richard Lewer.
Running until November 1, the Archibald Prize will give Victorian audiences their first opportunity to experience the historic portrait prize outside its Sydney home.
SAM artistic director Danny Lacy said the museum was thrilled to welcome the faces and stories of Australian culture to Shepparton as the exhibition’s first stop on its regional tour.
“The Archibald Prize is one of Australia’s most loved and anticipated exhibitions,” Mr Lacy said.
