“It’s hard to explain how you react to someone’s worst day,” she said.
That’s why she’s taking on the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb for the 10th time this Saturday, to raise funds and awareness.
The Shepparton East CFA lieutenant, a firefighter for the past 24 years, will be one of about 30 from Greater Shepparton taking part among the 1000 competitors.
Participants must climb 28 flights of stairs at the Crown Metropol in Melbourne wearing 25kg of firefighting gear and breathing apparatus.
Mrs Marsland has also chosen to wear a tank and face mask.
She describes the event as “my way to give back”.
The 000 Foundation is just one of the causes that the event raises funds for. It was set up by first responders for first responders, to assist with their mental health.
Other causes to benefit will be Lifeline and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation, which is involved because firefighters are 10 times more likely to suffer cancer than the general population.
“We all need these services, even in the country,” Mrs Marsland said.
The event may be highly physically demanding, but she says this doesn’t compare to the challenges of dealing with a mental health condition.
Preparation varies between participants, but for Mrs Marsland it usually involves around six climbs of the Telstra tower in Shepparton.
Those who wish to donate to the cause can do so by checking out the Shepparton East CFA on Facebook or going to firefighterclimb.org.au.
