A series of free events will give locals the chance to get practical advice, prepare their properties and learn what to do when fire threatens as part of Victoria’s Get Fire Ready initiative.
Barmah CFA will get things started with an open day and community meeting on Saturday, October 10 from 11am, aimed at Barmah and Lower Moira residents.
The session will cover local bush and grassfire risks, fire danger ratings, warnings, property preparation and developing a fire plan, followed by a free lunch.
Echuca CFA will open its High St station to the community on Sunday, October 18 from 10am to 2pm, combining fire preparation advice with a family day out.
Visitors can explore fire trucks, tour the station, tackle kids' activities and learn how to better protect their properties.
The brigade will also be recruiting junior firefighters aged 11 to 16.
The Campaspe Emergency Service Expo will follow at 1 Hopwood Place, Echuca, on Saturday, October 24 from 10am to 2pm.
Emergency services will demonstrate everything from smoke alarm maintenance and sandbagging to storm preparation and water safety.
CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said simple preparation could make a major difference.
“Preparedness saves lives. By getting fire ready now, communities can reduce their risk and respond quickly if fire threatens,” he said.
He urged residents to clear gutters, mow lawns, trim branches, make a fire plan and establish a watch zone in the VicEmergency app.
