The CFA is urging homeowners and residents to get their properties ready before fire season hits, with a series of Get Fire Ready community days running across the region.
So come for the snag, and stay for the fire plan.
Rochester Fire Brigade captain Chris Nisbet said Rochester was generally a lower bushfire risk area, but fast-moving grass fires could still threaten homes and properties.
He also reminded residents to swap out their smoke detector battery — and for those who can't safely reach their detector, the brigade is happy to lend a hand.
Locals can get hands-on fire preparedness advice at the Rochester Get Fire Ready event, running Saturday, October 17 from 11am to 2pm.
The event will be held in the main street outside IGA and Conlans Butchers, with residents able to speak with local CFA members about property preparation, fire danger ratings and emergency plans.
Free sausages are on offer, and the CFA will have brochures, information and maps on hand to help residents get to know their local area and plan for emergencies.
The event will also feature information about Rochester’s new fire station, including maps and renderings of the planned facility.
Kotta CFA is also hosting a community barbecue and fire safety night on October 16, held at the Kotta CFA shed from 6.30pm.
It will be a great opportunity for residents to ask questions about local fire risks, property preparation, and how to keep up to date with emergency information and warnings.
A community barbecue will be available for $10 per person, with showbags and activities planned for children.
The CFA is urging residents and property owners to make the most of the evening — get informed, understand your local fire risk, and take practical steps to be ready before summer arrives.
