Calvin Carlyon, 20, of Kurunjang, pleaded guilty in Echuca Magistrates’ Court to possessing a prohibited drug, driving while suspended and stating a false name to police.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Remo Antolini told the court Carlyon was caught driving while suspended when stopped by police in Rochester at 10.57pm on March 20.
The court heard Carlyon provided his brother’s first name to police, rather than his own.
Police found 1.5g of cannabis in a clear zip-lock bag hidden inside a black cross-body bag and a bank card with the name Calvin Carlyon inscribed.
Sen Constable Antolini said despite police finding the bank card, Carlyon “maintained that Calvin was his brother”.
It was only after he reached the Rochester Police Station that Carlyon confessed his real first name.
Carlyon, who was representing himself, said he “was going through a rough time at the time” of the offences.
“I do notice I have accumulated quite a few offences, offences that I am still dealing with the ramifications of,” he said.
“I am trying to be goal-driven and start getting these matters out of the way so I can move on to a more mature point in my life.”
Magistrate Trieu Huynh said this was Carlyon’s third driving while suspended offence.
“I hope you cease this kind of activity and respect that your licence is a privilege and not a right,” he said.
Carlyon was fined $500 without conviction.
