Cr Pappin confirmed he’d been nominated for the position and said he was running to “change the status quo”.
“I hope I’m elected because I think we need a change of leadership,” Cr Pappin said.
“It’s only fair new councillors have a chance to take up leadership roles, so I’m putting my hand up.”
He’ll have to get past Mayor John Harvie, who confirmed he was seeking a second term.
“I have been nominated,” he said.
“You never feel totally confident (you’ll win), and ultimately it’s a decision for councillors on the day.
“I’m just thrilled to be nominated.”
Cr Gen Campbell said she’d also received a nomination for the position but was still undecided if she would accept it.
Cr Pappin confirmed he’d also received support to run for deputy mayor, setting up a potential contest with incumbent Cr Neil Gorey.
The deputy mayor said he’d defend his position and he hoped to continue using the platform to advocate for communities in the west of the local government area.
Crs Dennis Gleeson, Joy Allan, Kylie Berryman and Geoff Wise won’t be seeking a promotion, and Cr Bianca Hurn did not reply to The Riv’s request for comment.
All candidates must formally accept their nominations at tomorrow’s extraordinary meeting before councillors vote on who will lead them for the next two years.
