May is Rotary Australia's BowelScan Month, and the members at Tatura Rotary have teamed up with the pharmacies in Tatura and Murchison to make testing kits easily accessible.
According to Rotary Australia, about 80 Australians die from bowel cancer every week — but if detected early 90 per cent of bowel cancer cases are treatable.
Tatura Rotary member Bill Purcell said people should take advantage of the opportunity to be tested, as they had nothing to lose.
“A few years ago a woman bought three kits for herself, husband and 40-year-old son,” he said.
“All three returned a positive test and her son's condition would never have been discovered if his mother hadn't purchased the kits; it saved his life.
“She now buys a kit or two each year and gives them to others as a present.”
Testing kits to scan for bowel cancer are available for $20 from the Tatura pharmacies next month.
