What’s on: this weekend in sport

By Andrew Johnston

Having missed out on a week of action due to the weather, Goulburn Murray Cricket will return this weekend with a top-of-the-table blockbuster.

With the return of play comes the return of two-day cricket for the 2019/20 season.

The highlight of the round comes in a first-versus-second clash between Cooma and Tongala.

Cooma has been the surprise packet of the season thus far, currently sitting on a perfect record at the ladder's summit.

Tongala has continued its strong form of 2019 with three wins from four matches to start the 2019-20 season.

For Tongala to get overt the line, it will have to limit the impact of Stephen Barrett, who is leading the competition in runs with 231 at 115.50.

With a top score of 83no and three half-centuries, Barrett has been a star of the competition so far.

Tongala's bowling unit is a strong one, with no individual standing a mile apart from his teammates.

Daniel Coombs and Dylan Cunningham both have six wickets on the season, while Darin Ohlsen has five.

A full team bowling effort should see Tongala in a good position to take this match.

■WHAT could have been.

If not for Moama's removal from the finals series the match between the Magpies and Fire Brigade would have been the first semi final just a few months ago.

Instead, it will be round six action for the new season.

These two sides round out the top four, and have both produced some solid cricket this year.

This is likely to be a strong match.

■BOTH Echuca and BLU will be desperate to pick up their second victories of the season.

Neither side has been able to really get going, but a victory here should be enough to get them going.

Its a long way back to the top four, but we shall see if either side can get there.

■IF ECHUCA South are going to get a win to break their year long losing streak, they are going to have to have to go through Rochester.

It doesn't bode well for the Swans.

Rochester are still trying to find their premiership form of last season.

The Swans have had signs, and are definitely getting closer, but this is till going to be a difficult match this round.

ECHUCA South 2 will be the only section one side on the road this week in the CTA.

They will head to Rochester to take on Rochester 1.

For the remaining teams, they will be remaining in town.

All but Rich River 1 will be at the Echuca Lawn Tennis Club, with RR1 taking on Elmore 1 at home.

Rich River Rebels will host Shepparton Bulls, while Echuca/Rochester will host Shepparton Lakers in GM1 action on Saturday.

MOAMA and Rich River will be clashing today at the Moama Bowling Club, while Echuca will host Deniliquin.

TONGALA will look to to extend their lead on top of the CVBD weekend ladder when they host Rochester on Saturday.

Moama and Rich River will follow their mid-week clash with a weekend clash at MBC, while Echuca will be on the road at Mathoura.
