And when both games of a back-to-back weekend end in close ones, there are more than a few questions left in your head.
That was the case for the Echuca Pirates’ women's basketball side after it suffered a six-point loss to Mildura on Saturday night, and a three-point loss to Swan Hill on Sunday.
The results have the team sitting last on the CBL North West ladder without a win and with just one game to play.
Pirates coach Lisa Baker said it was a tough weekend for her side.
"The first quarter of both games we played really well,” she said.
"We were shooting well, we were doing everything right on the defensive end.
"But as it went on, the opposition started edging their way back in and we became a bit stagnant.
"In both games we got beaten around the buzzer time. The team is disappointed, and there were a lot of what ifs from the players afterwards.
"But you take that as a learning curve. As I said to the girls if this was a proper season and we got to play each other twice we would get them the second time. But that's the reality of sport."
Baker said though the team had just one game left in the shortened season, she was happy just to be on the court.
"We have the one home game remaining so it really hasn't been a long season, but it's been good just to be back on the court,” Baker said.
Echuca's men's side split their results for the weekend, with a 15-point win against Mildura on Saturday night, before suffering a blow-out loss by 20 on Sunday to Swan Hill.
The Pirates sit third with one game to play for the season.
“It was like chocolates to boiled lollies,” coach Leo Tenace.
“Saturday was a really good game against a strong opposition. Sunday we should have won but we were a bit reactive and didn't play our best game.
“It's an issue of consistency that we will work on. We have Maryborough in our last game and we think if we win that we will be playing finals, rather than relying on other results.
“Hopefully we can put our best basketball together for the last game and stay in the competition a bit longer.”
