Picola United kept in touch with Strathmerton for most of the game, but couldn’t find its way back from a first-half deficit.

The Blues went on the road to Strathmerton Recreation Reserve for the penultimate game of their season and the visitor kept the Bulldogs in touch for much of the contest.

The home side would kick two goals in the opening term to Picola’s one, taking a seven-point lead into the first break.

The second saw both attacks warming into the game, but a four-goal-to-three quarter didn’t do much for the Bulldogs’ margin, the lead growing to 16 at the main break.

Picola showed resilience coming out of the half and matched the hosts shot for shot in the third, the Blues chipping one off the deficit and keeping the Dogs within reach at three-quarter time.

Unfortunately, that was where the fightback ended for Picola and, instead of making a push to level things up, it was instead the Bulldogs who surged clear, kicking three goals to one down the stretch to secure a 13.13 (91) to 9.5 (59) victory.

Picola (4-1-10) is all but certain to finish the season in 12th, regardless of its result on the final weekend, at home against Katunga.
