Bombers fail to fire against Heathcote

The Saints’ stronger start to the match ultimately proved the difference, as Heathcote came out firing with four goals to one in the first quarter.

The second term saw the Bombers fight back with three majors to one, winning the period by seven points, but still trailing by a goal at half-time, 5.2 (32) to 5.8 (38).

Heathcote won the third term by the same amount with 5.2 to Leitchville’s 4.1, meaning the Saints held their final match-winning margin at three-quarter time.

Although nine goals were exchanged in the previous quarter and the Bombers were likely starting to throw numbers forward in an attempt to come back, neither side kicked a major in the fourth term.

The well-fought contest would conclude with Heathcote and Leitchville each kicking three behinds, the Bombers going down 9.6 (60) to 10.13 (73).

The sides have now played two close encounters this season — Leitchville won the first meeting by 11 points in round two — and they are also close to each other on the ladder, the Bombers dropping to sixth with this defeat, while Heathcote jumped up to fifth.

Leitchville has the opportunity to regroup from its two straight losses by serving a bye this weekend.
