After a heavy opening defeat Mathoura showed much more fight in its second Picola District Netball League fixture, but couldn’t hold on to pick up the win.
The Timbercutters hosted their first home fixture of the year, Berrigan visiting Mathoura Recreation Reserve for what turned out to be a tight back and forth battle.
Mathoura started the stronger in the first quarter, edging ahead 9-7 at the end of 15 minutes.
The Cutters continued to work well in the second and narrowly extended the lead to three by the main break.
Berrigan upped its efforts coming out of the break and over the third period managed to erase the deficit, the two club’s resetting at 25-all at three-quarter time.
Mathoura wasn’t able to maintain its level in the final term and the Saints broke away to win by six goals, 36-30.
Now 0-2, the Cutters will hope to put in another competitive performance this week when they host Picola United.
The Blues have had a strong start to the campaign, winning their first two fixtures.
