The Katamatite football product’s tenure as Collingwood’s AFLW head coach will finish on Sunday afternoon following the Magpies’ final round clash against Essendon after a tumultuous season for the black and white.
With a rock-bottom 1-10 record, the Pies have also faced controversy as their skipper Ruby Schleicher announced she will seek a move to West Coast after Collingwood reportedly offered a stunning low ball on her contract, while a myriad of dysfunctional issues within the women’s program could also see a number of uncontracted players walk out of the club this off-season.
Wright was contracted for 2027, but with the Collingwood board set to discuss the direction of the AFLW program, the 36-year-old made the call himself to step aside from his role.
A former North Melbourne player and Kangaroos assistant coach in their successful AFLW program, Wright took the reins in 2024.
The Magpies recorded five wins from 34 games under his tutelage.
While it did not result in much success on-field, Wright reflected with gratitude in his resigning announcement.
“It has been a privilege to serve the AFLW program at Collingwood,” Wright said.
“I will always look back on my time at the Pies with gratitude, and I want to thank every player, coach, staff member and supporter I’ve shared this journey with.
“While these decisions are never easy, I know it is the right one for my family and the football program as we move forward.
“I look forward to coaching the group this Sunday and I wish them all the very best for the future – I leave knowing Collingwood is committed to driving its AFLW program forward.”
Collingwood chief executive Craig Kelly thanked Wright for his impact across the three years of women’s football.
“On behalf of the Collingwood Football Club, we thank Sam for his contribution over the past three seasons,” Kelly said.
“Sam has led our AFLW program with genuine care and we will recognise his contribution following our final game of the season this weekend.
“We recognise the significant commitment the Senior Coach role requires and we thank not only Sam, but also his partner Georgia, for her support. We wish Sam and his family every success in their next chapter.”
Wright’s final game as Magpies head coach begins at 1.05pm at Windy Hill on Sunday.
