Kyabram’s Charlie McLay was at his stump-skittling best on Saturday afternoon at Princess Park, as the second round of the Cricket Shepparton Haisman Shield saw Kyabram continue where it had left off in March and round one.

After a landslide result against Pine Lodge the week prior, the Redbacks made short work of Shepparton Youth Club United, although the boys in blue had their positive moments.
The Redbacks launched out to a 65-run opening partnership between Billy McLay and Cade Mueller, however it wasn’t quite the 200-run stand between the pair last week, as McLay scooped SYCU’s George Geaves to a deep mid-off standing Max Henderson for SYCU’s first pole.
An over and a half later, Mueller would falter to a Geaves delivery, before United’s Sam Nash bowled Kyabram’s Paul Parsons.
Geaves would strike again, this time on the pads of young Gus Byrne, Kyabram collapsing to 4-78.
However, the skipper would steady the ship.
Kyle Mueller six fours and two sixes in a rapid knock of 80 off 65 balls, well-accompanied by Lukas Hanslow’s 39 off 54 and Charlie McLay’s 44 off 31, reminding SYCU with a harsh lesson of the depth that runs through this reigning premier side.
“We were in a bit of a tricky spot but Kyle and Lukas put on a 100-run partnership, which set us up for the back end of the innings nicely,” Kyabram coach Jackson McLay said.
The Redbacks were bowled out but with only one ball left, for 257.
While United enjoyed a grand opening stand in round one, the same wasn’t to be in round two.
After nearing a ton last week, SYCU’s Tyler Green was caught and bowled by Jackson McLay, before the McLay of the Charlie variation stole the show.
Ripping through mainly the middle order, the leg side umpire may have had a sore back after hustling to pick up the bails over and over again, McLay launching a terrifying tirade at the pegs.
Claiming six wickets, four of which cannoned into the stumps, SYCU finished all out for 109, recording a 148-run loss.
“His all round game was pretty special,” Jackson McLay said.
“He came in late into the innings and it allowed him to play his shots and score quite freely, and those 40-odd runs at the end really propelled the score.
“He opened the bowling last week but this week he bowled the middle overs and it showed how versatile he is.
“The deck really suited him and he used it to his advantage bowling cutters and slower balls.”
Kyabram's Lukas Hanslow takes the rock between overs.

Kyabram face Tatura in round three, the latter itching for a victory after an 0-2 start to the season, while SYCU travel to Waaia, the Bombers looking to continue an unbeaten start to the summer of Cricket Shepparton.
“Tat will be a bit of a stronger challenge for us,” McLay said.
“We’re going alright but there’s little things we’d like to iron out, and it’s a chance to put a good gap between us and them.”
THE GAME
Kyabram 257 (Kyle Mueller 80, Cade Mueller 45, George Geaves 3-47) d SYCU 109 (Connor Green 20, Max Henderson 15, Charlie McLay 6-33)
