Mowers building towards finals

The Goulburn Murray Women’s and Girls Leagues returned from hiatus last weekend, and Moama picked up where it left off in both divisions.

Both the women’s and girls sides dominated the opposition, executing six shut-out quarters between the two games.

Women’s

On the road at Tatura Park, the Mowers walked through the Bulldogs 8.12 (60) to 1.1 (7).

The host didn’t get on the board until the final term, Moama kicking 5.9 in the first half while keeping the play in the forward half and denying the Bulldogs entirely.

It was 59-0 at three-quarter time, before Tatura finally found some offence in the final period.

The Bulldogs actually won the last term, kicking the only goal, but Moama was well out of reach.

The Mowers shared their eight goals around, only Shani Miller getting on the board twice, with six others chipping in.

Moama is mostly in a holding pattern with just three weeks to go in the regular season, a top-two finish all but locked up.

The most significant fixture in the run home comes against leader Shepparton United in the penultimate round, on July 24, but before that clash, the Mowers host Shepparton Swans in Moama this Sunday.

Youth Girls

Moama’s girls team continued to solidify itself as a heavy title favourite, crushing Cobram 11.13 (79) to 1.

The Tigers found their lone point in the first term, but never got much of a look in later on as the Mowers started to run up the score.

Moama’s early goalkicking on its home patch wasn’t particularly sniper like, starting 3.7 in the first term, but the side was able to tighten things up as the game wore on.

The Mowers had 7.10 on the board at half time, and eased through the second half on their way to the 78-point win.

Bendigo Pioneers rep Eliza Fraser led the scoring with four majors, while joint league-leader Ruby McLeod had three.

Moama has locked down the minor premiership with three rounds still left to play, 10 points clear and with leader chaser Shepparton Swans still with a bye on its schedule.

The Mowers clash with the Swans and remaining member of the top three Shepparton United over the next fortnight in important tune-up games for the impending finals series.
