After a strong opening round win over Shepparton Youth Club, the women’s side took on a Mooroopna outfit that was also victorious in its opening fixture.
With both sides entering the game with confidence high, they would play out a thrilling encounter, with Mooroopna prevailing 3-2, condemning its opponent to its first loss and usurping Echuca Moama on top of the four-team ladder.
The River Rats men didn’t fare as well, going down 7-0 for the second consecutive week, this time to Shepparton Blue.
Finally to the juniors, where the under-16s suffered a heavy 6-2 defeat to the Benalla/SYC Tigers, while the under-13s performed the best out of all Echuca-Moama sides, drawing 4-4 with Mooroopna.
This weekend is a particularly important one for the local hockey club, celebrating its Good Sports Game Ready Round and Women’s Round, with all teams playing at Echuca College against Shepparton Strikers on Saturday.
A barbecue and bake sale will complement the club’s canteen being open throughout the day.
The day will also be dedicated to one of its former players and life members in Carol Gulson, with the senior teams set to be wearing pink socks and all funds raised from the barbecue and bake sale being donated to the Echuca Cancer and Wellness Centre in Gulson’s memory.
Elsewhere, the Castlemaine side playing in Hockey Central Victoria, made up of Echuca-Moama players, put in a much-improved performance in its round four clash against Strathdale Tigers, though still lost 4-2.
The side’s next fixture is this Sunday against Eaglehawk, set to begin at 2.45pm.
