IDAHOBIT is observed internationally on May 17 and commemorates the World Health Organization’s decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1990.
The 2026 theme, ‘At the heart of democracy’, highlights that true democratic societies must be grounded in justice, dignity and freedom for all, particularly at a time when LGBTIQA+ rights are under increasing pressure globally.
Campaspe Shire Deputy Mayor Tony Marwood said IDAHOBIT was an important opportunity for the community to stand together against discrimination and affirm council’s commitment to inclusion.
“IDAHOBIT is about visibility, respect and ensuring everyone in our community feels safe to be who they are,” he said.
“This year’s theme reminds us that equality and human rights aren’t optional extras. They’re central to a functioning democracy.’’
Local celebrations will be held in Echuca on Friday, May 15, starting with a flag-raising and speeches at Hopwood Gardens at 9.30am.
Following this, community members are invited to attend a range of activities at Echuca library, all free and open to the public:
- All day Pride-themed arts and crafts
- 11.30am to 1.45pm: Story Sharing in the ‘Human Library’, facilitated by Thorne Harbour Country, featuring powerful local stories of resilience, identity and community. Light refreshments, tea and coffee provided.
