Festival director Anna Smith is currently putting a call out for entries for this year’s event.
Entries are open until June 30, for short films no longer than 15 minutes, with a MA15+ or lower rating.
Categories are: Best Film: $1500, Best Student Film: $500, Best International Film: $500, Best Documentary Film: $500, The Kevin Perry Encouragement Award: $250, Best Local Film (within 150km of Benalla): $250 and People’s Choice: $250.
Ms Smith said last year’s entries exceeded all expectations, with a staggering 87 short films submitted
“This made our judges’ decision all the more difficult,” she said.
“But audiences were delighted with their choices.
“Last year’s local category and people’s choice winner was (Benalla’s) Hayley Warnock for her film Koala-fied to Survive.”
Judges Krista Vendy and Bruce Hunt-Hughes will return to the festival, once again.
“Krista has balanced her acting and modelling career and with a lifelong interest in charity, which is evident by her commitment as judge, now returning for her fifth year,” Ms Smith said.
Ms Smith said Mr Hunt-Hughes’ career began on the London stage with A Streetcar Named Desire.
“His bio is quite extensive, and includes A Country Practice, Blue Heelers, Halifax FP, City Homicide and Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War.
The 2026 Benalla National and International Short Film Festival will take place at the Benalla Cinema on Mair St, on November 8.
