Gannawarra Shire Council is cracking down on illegal dumping following increased incidents across urban and rural areas of the municipality.

Furniture, household goods, green waste and building materials have been dumped on rural roadsides, urban nature strips, vacant land and public reserves and reported to council.

Under council's Community Amenity Local Law 2023, penalties apply when materials are left on council land or public places without approval, with removal costs passed to the responsible party.

‘’Illegal dumping is not a victimless act,’’ council chief executive Geoff Rollinson said.

‘’It puts our community at risk, damages the appearance of our towns and rural areas, and the cost of cleaning it up is ultimately borne by ratepayers.

‘’Items left on nature strips and roadsides can also block pedestrian access, especially for wheelchair and pram users and create safety hazards for motorists.’’

Council is increasing monitoring efforts and will pursue penalties where offenders can be identified.

Residents should use council transfer stations for disposal or arrange private collection.
