Senior Constable Scott Newton of Campaspe criminal investigation unit said five divers and two Search and Rescue members in a boat came up from Melbourne, spending hours scouring the creek yesterday.
"The area isn't wide but it's long and goes into Kow Swamp. There are also plenty of logs," he said.
"We're trying our best and making inquiries as to what happened and his location as soon as possible."
Snr Constable Newton said an appeal to the public had not gained "anything of value".
The search stopped on dark last night but has resumed this morning.
The 49-year-old father-of-two was last seen at a Gunbower-Pyramid Rd property in Gunbower about 4am on Saturday, February 22.
Allitt was driving an allegedly stolen ute on private property when he lost control and drove into Mount Hope Creek.
Police have been told Allitt exited the vehicle and was last seen swimming in an unknown direction.
When police arrived, there was no sign of him, but a woman at the scene was arrested and was charged and bailed and will appear in Echuca Magistrates Court on April 24.
Allitt is described as 186cm tall, with a solid build, brown hair and brown eyes.
He was last seen wearing a t-shirt, grey Adidas track pants and Blundstone boots.
Investigators have released an image of Allitt in the hope someone may be able to provide information on his whereabouts.
Anyone who sees Allitt is urged to contact Echuca police on 5483 1500.
