Investigators were told a 21-year-old Epsom woman was walking with two men when she was shot in the upper body near Mincha-Canary Island Rd about 3.20am. They took refuge in a nearby house.
‘‘When police and ambulance arrived, they found the female with a gunshot wound to her mid-torso,’’ Detective Sergeant Brad Potts said.
The woman was taken to Bendigo hospital with non-life-threatening injuries in a serious but stable condition.
A 69-year-old Mincha man was taken into custody yesterday, but had not yet been charged.
‘‘We located him and he is assisting us with our inquiries,’’ Det. Sgt Potts said. ‘‘We are also speaking to the two males who were with the woman.’’
Det. Sgt Potts could not say whether the attack was drug-related, but he did not believe the pair was known to each other.
‘‘We don’t believe it was random so there is no threat to the greater community,’’ he said.
‘‘We don’t know what the motivation is or the circumstances because it’s too early to say.
‘‘This is still an active crime scene and we’ll be here for the rest of the day to establish the circumstances of the shooting.
‘‘We’ve still got a fair bit to go through.’’
Det. Sgt Potts urged anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
