A Grade travelled to Urana Road oval last Saturday to take on the New City Phoenix. Desperately needing a victory to kick start the season, the team welcomed back Luke Backhouse from representative duties and Jed Longmire was promoted after a strong showing in B Grade.
Winning the toss, Corowa elected to bat with new opening partnership of Mitch Wagstaff and Arthur Godsal to provide a platform for a big score. After working through a challenging spell from opening bowler Tuffey, Mitch was again on the wrong side of a questionable umpiring decision to be out for 27 in a 44 run opening stand.
Paddy Lavis joined as the pair continued to steadily build a platform with New City bowling well to the conditions, moving the score to 72 before Paddy was out to a sharp return catch, then Arthur was out shortly after caught and bowled as well the platform had been eroded and New City seized the momentum. Things got worse when Matt Wilson was bowled by Tuffey leaving the team teetering at 4 for 97 needing a spark.
Jarryd Hatton looked to provide that joining Jarred Lane and taking the attack to the New City bowlers hitting a couple of massive sixes and pushing the New City fielders back until he took on one too many to be caught in the deep for 21. Jeremy Carr, Jed Longmire and Jack Eales all fell to the spinners with Jarred Lane anchoring the innings with 53. Nick Grant and Mark Athanitis took it to the last ball with Corowa all out for 183 off the final delivery - a defendable score but a few runs short of what could have been.
Corowa needed to make inroads with the new ball but New City had other plans although creating some half chances and plenty of plays and misses it took until the 8th over to get the breakthrough with Arthur deceiving Maruma with a slower ball with the score on 32. Corowa rotated through the bowlers trying to find a wicket with Jack Eales bowling really well and creating pressure, however similar to last week missed chances would be rued with Botha making the most of his luck to guide his side to victory. Arthur was able to pick up another wicket with the score 149 although New City were able to coast to the line with 20 balls to spare.
It was another solid performance which in years gone by may have been enough for victory however with the rise in standard in the competition this year the team will have to find another gear to get on the winners list in the first home game of the season against Belvoir at Ball Park this Saturday.
B Grade
One of the youngest B Grade sides ever took to the field in the first game at Ball Park for the season but the side had a bad day at the office going down by 71 runs.
It was evident it wasn’t going to be Corowa’s day early with the bowlers struggling with their radars and with the fielders dropping at least 6 chances New City was able to post 157 before being bowled out in the 42nd over. Bailey Minogue was the leading wicket taker with 3 for 27, while Jacob Fuge took 2 for 18 and Kade Wilson 2 for 32. Sundries top scored for New City with 40.
In reply to the Corowa batters struggled with only 3 players making it to double figures. Thirteen-year-old Joe Lavis top scored with 17 while Kade Wilson (15) and Bailey Minogue (11) the other batsmen to make above 10.
C Grade
Liam McDonell’s hitting has led C Grade to another massive victory this time against North Albury at Thurgoona.
Winning the toss and bowling all the bowlers were on target as they restricted North Albury to 8 for 96 off their 40 overs. Cody Kuschert was the leading wicket taker with 2 for 7 off 5 overs, while Danny Osborne, Blayre Smith, Caleb Kuschert, Judd Kuschert and Matt Shipard all collecting a wicket each.
In the chase McDonell was on fire as he smashed 72 off 24 balls as Corowa reached the target in 7.4 overs. McDonell hit 7 boundaries and 6 sixes in his quick-fire innings. Matt Shipard was 22 not out and Judd Kuschert 4 not out as Corowa was 1 for 101 when the game finished.
Under 16s
The Under 16s returned to the winners list with a victory over Lavington at Balldale.
Bowling first Corowa did well to restrict Lavington to 9 for 113 off their 20 overs. Ethan Lane led from the front taking 5 for 19 off his 4 overs. He was well supported by Ashton Wynne with 1 for 7 of 3 overs and Jackson Hargraves with 1 for 9 off 2 overs.
In reply Corowa’s Lane led the way again making 50 retired and with Brodie Eyers making 27 and Joe Lavis 32 not out, Corowa secured victory with the game finishing after 15 overs with Corowa 2 for 125.
Under 14s
The Under 14s made it two wins in a row with a good victory over Wodonga at St Monica’s in Wodonga
Bowling first, Corowa bowlers were on top as they restricted Wodonga to 6 for 84 off their 20 overs. Eli Lavis bowled well taking 2 for 2 off 2 overs, while Joe Lavis, Toby Hanrahan, Aiden Wintle and Archie Bedford all took a wicket.
In reply Archer Coppolino smashed 30 retired in 15 balls and along with Blake Collins with 20, Rhylee Barber with 23 not out and Toby Hanrahan and Levi Phibbs with 13 each Corowa cruised to 7 for 143 off their 20 overs.
Under 12s
White - Div 1
Corowa White took to Norris Park on Friday night full of energy and enthusiasm. Fielding first on a warm afternoon, they started positively with Finny Douglas throwing down a very tidy wicket-maiden to open things up. The Lavington batsmen showed good form and found some gaps in the field. However, a tidy runout from Cal Corcoran and an excellent caught and bowled effort from Jake Witherden helped stem the runs. A final hooping in-swinger from Finley Douglas put paid to the Lavington batting and set the scene for a solid run-chase.
Looking to chase down 94 runs, the Douglas brothers made a positive start, taking the shine off the new ball before Cal Corcoran and Lachie Douglas worked to build a solid total. When Lachie fell for 23 the side were 2/60 and looking solid. However, despite some patient batting from Nathias Price and Aiden Ratcliffe, and 24 runs from Cal Corcoran, a middle order collapse created some difficulties, leaving the team stranded just 14 runs short of the total.
This week's fielding effort and our running between the wickets were hugely improved. This is a team that is building towards some solid performances. Well done, kids!
Blue – Div 1
Blue went down in a thriller by four runs in a higher scoring game against St Pats at North St Oval.
St Patricks used the fast out field to advantage in the first 10 overs as they raced to 1 for 99. Blue bowlers hit back in the next 10 overs as they restricted St Patricks to 6 for 146. Josh Kremmer bowled really well taking 3 for 9 off 3 overs, while Will Giason took his first wicket finishing with 1 for 16 off his 3 overs.
In reply Blue was in early trouble at 3 for 11, but with Archie Rhodes on fire with a quick fire 44 off 18 balls and with Harry Norman (31*), Jackson Barber (23*), Noah Cracknell (9) and Jake Rhodes (8*) all providing support, Blue got down needing 15 of the last over but could only manage 10 as they finished their 20 overs at 6 for 142.
Div 2
Corowa had another close game this time going down by 8 runs to Scots School at Noreuil Park.
Bowling first Charlie Kay led the way taking 4 for 13 off 3 overs as Scots School finished their 20 overs at 125.
In reply Corowa made 117 with George Smith 19*, Patrick Colman 12, and Darcy Upton 10 all reaching double figures.
