Gannawarra Shire Council will receive $2.6 million from the government’s $2.7 billion Building Works package, developed to support local jobs and drive investment in the region post-COVID-19.
The $2.1 million Cohuna CBD and Waterfront Development will proceed thanks to a $1.7 million investment from the government.
“The government’s announcement of support for these two key projects demonstrates Council’s continued advocacy for investment in tourism and economic development opportunities within the Gannawarra,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.
“With communities still feeling the effects of the drought and now the economic impacts of Coronavirus, these projects instil hope and confidence in our business and tourism sectors.”
The Cohuna CBD and Waterfront Development, identified during the Waterfront Masterplan process in 2018 and 2019, will link the town to Gunbower Creek.
“These works will involve a significant upgrade to the Cohuna CBD including new surface treatments, landscaping and redevelopment of the road crossing to Garden Park,” Mayor Learmonth said.
“The project will also improve the linkages from the CBD to the Gunbower creek and encourage more use of the waterfront for recreation and commercial activities.”
Meanwhile, the final stage of the Tate Drive Industrial Estate expansion in Kerang will open up space for extra lots along the southern section of the site.
“Council continues to work with business owners looking to develop industrial opportunities throughout the Gannawarra, with the need for extra space pivotal for future growth,” Mayor Learmonth said.
“The estate is a key site for the creation of jobs and investment, as well as ongoing opportunities for the development of new businesses.”
Kerang’s industrial estate expansion will also take place due to the funding.
