Echuca-Moama Kiwanis joined those showing their appreciation by donating $200 to the Murray River Tea Rooms to purchase coffees for the border check personnel.
“We realise many of the police and members of the ADF are away from their homes and families, and not doing what they’d normally be doing,” Echuca-Moama Kiwanis president Tim Dawes said.
“The double win out of this is we also like supporting the Murray River Tea Rooms.
“Community Living & Respite Services do fantastic things in both towns.”
Murray River Police District Inspector Paul Huggett said the community support has been humbling.
“All the police are truly humbled by the generosity, the constant waves and happy faces,” he said.
“We’re working our hardest with the community to get them through the checkpoint as quick as we can.
“It’s anticipated we will be here for an extended period of time.”
To improve the process, Insp Huggett reminded those crossing the bridge to display their permit on their car dashboard with their licence at the ready.
