Echuca pub owner fined for opening during lockdown

Victoria Police confirmed infringement notices were issued for two breaches on July 19 and 20 at the premises.

The Riv believes Mr Andrews was fined more than $20,000.

Under Victoria’s lockdown rules, hospitality venues are allowed to open for takeaway services only.

But speaking to the Riv on Monday, Mr Andrews said the restrictions were hypocritical, with larger stores such as supermarkets, pharmacists and service stations allowed to operate while small business owners were forced to close their doors.

“They’re corporate giants. Why are they allowed to be open when small business can’t?” he said.

“You get 50-100 people in Woolworths at any one time. What’s the difference with me having 20 people in here and serving them a meal?

“People are walking in there to buy food. Why can’t they come in here and have a beer?”
