As of September 1, the new Australian Fire Danger Rating System will have four levels, with action-oriented messages, logical colours and simple descriptions to encourage people to take action to protect themselves and others in the face of bushfire risks.
The AFDRS is a project of national significance being developed collaboratively by state, territory and federal governments. It aims to improve public safety and reduce the impacts of bushfires by:
• Improving the scientific accuracy behind fire danger predictions.
• Improving the way fire danger is communicated.
• Providing government and industry with better decision-making tools.
• Reducing the costs associated with bushfire impacts.
