As Echuca fills up for the school holidays the TAC and Echuca Police are reminding drivers to plan ahead, slow down, and take regular breaks on their road trips.
Four people have died on roads in Campaspe Shire since January, with the majority of Victoria’s road fatalities occurring outside metropolitan Melbourne.
Leading Senior Constable Shane Roberts said for first responders, the trauma of attending a scene could have lasting impacts.
“You never know if it’s someone you’re going to know,” he said.
“Everyone’s trying to get their holidays started as soon as they can, and it can be a recipe for disaster.
“The town’s buzzing, which is great, but there are more people to look out for and people who may be unfamiliar with our roads and conditions.
“My message is simple, slow down, plan ahead, and make sure you’re staying alert and not driving fatigued.
While less people have died on Victoria’s roads in 2026 than at the same point last year, the TAC’s chief executive Tracey Slatter is warning against complacency.
“We want every Victorian to enjoy the school holidays and get home safely,” she said.
“That means slowing down, planning ahead, and remembering that no trip is worth taking risks for."
“Fatigue can affect drivers long before they fall asleep at the wheel, if you’re starting to lose concentration, struggling to keep your eyes open or feeling tired, don’t push through it.”
“Pull over, take a break and arrive safely.”
