Eagles slice up premier

Echuca United has earned its best four points of the season, taking down the reigning premier Cobram in round nine of Murray Football League.

The Eagles started slowly at home at Echuca South Recreation Reserve, but seized control of the game in the second quarter and never let go.

The Tigers were the early leaders, jumping to a 13-0 advantage, which translated to a 27-14 lead at quarter-time.

However, United would come out firing in the second term and four straight goals saw the Eagles on top by double digits at the main break.

A wayward Cobram went goalless in the term, poor kicking putting the premier in a hole 42-32.

Echuca United continued its run after half-time, responsible for the next four scoring shots, but Cobram recovered late and threw the game back into doubt, two majors cutting the lead to a goal at the final change.

But the fourth quarter would follow the path of the second, the Eagles finding two valuable majors to lock up the game, while Cobram was left spraying shots wide, kicking 0.5 down the stretch, leaving United to claim the spoils 9.10 (64) to 6.14 (50).

Cody Haub led the way with three goals, while six other Eagles chipped in one in a team effort.

The victory keeps United in reach of the finals spots, a game out of fifth as things stand.

A clash with cross-river rival Moama (4-4) could prove critical to the Eagles’ hopes in the second half of the year.
