Rochester Bowls Club
Friday bowls
Despite cold conditions and persistent fog, 18 dedicated bowlers took to the green for drawn triples on Friday, July 17 and all deserve a medal for bravery.
Their enthusiasm and commitment were rewarded with an enjoyable afternoon of competition.
Winners for the day, with a win in both their games, were Bert Smolenaars, Kevin Hall and Brenda Wilkin.
Congratulations on your standout performance to claim top honours.
Please note: There will be no Friday afternoon bowls on July 24 as organisers and many bowlers have other commitments.
It is imperative that if you have your name down to play and find that you are unavailable, that you either remove your name or let one of the organisers know.
Indoor bowls
Unfortunately, there was no indoor bowls played last Monday, July 13.
On Monday, July 20, there will be bowls commencing at 7pm.
Once again, bowlers are requested to be in attendance by 6.45pm to allow the organisers to select teams and get play underway by the scheduled time.
Vale Bob Knight (OAM)
The Rochester Bowls Club extends its deepest sympathy to Marg, their family and friends on the passing of our much-loved member and dear friend, Bob Knight on July 16.
Bob was an outstanding sportsman and a dedicated volunteer and a true servant of our club for many years.
His unwavering commitment earned him life membership, while his achievements on the green and his leadership off it are reflected in the many honour boards that proudly bear his name.
Bob also served the club with distinction in several leadership roles, including chair and secretary of the board.
More importantly, Bob will be remembered for his warmth, quick wit, generosity and genuine sportsmanship.
His friendship, guidance and tireless contribution enriched not only the Rochester Bowls Club but the wider Rochester community.
His legacy will continue to inspire generations of bowlers and volunteers.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at the Rochester Shire Hall on Friday, July 24, at 10am.
Later, there will be a wake, which the Rochester Bowls Club has been honoured to assist with.
We thank the many members who have already volunteered their time and support, a gesture that is deeply appreciated by Marg and the Knight family.
Bob’s presence will be greatly missed, but his contribution to our club and community will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Bob. Your legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing you.

The Rochester Bowls Club hosted two very significant wakes in the last week.

Lockington Bowls Club
With the winter on in earnest, the hardy bowlers are consistent with their outlook on the weekly Scrounge events.
Last Wednesday, the field settled on the three rinks in operation.
Club President John van den Bosch, returned from a short break to win rink one on 44 points ahead of Steve Peter 40 followed by Donna Hart 25 and Owen McPhee 21.
Next door John Andrea was in superb form to amass a game high 60 points and lead from start to finish to defeat Terrill Westwood 49 and Rod Fiedler, a well-compiled 31 points.
The final rink was collected by Neil Haines amassing 56 points and survived a late challenge from Peter "Eggsy" Egan 51.
Lorraine Appleby was next best on 33 points.
The Saturday Scrounge brought on fog, fog and more fog with bowlers just seeing the kitty up the other end.
Shorter ends were the name of the game.
Despite the conditions, the bowling was of a high standard from the small field.
Owen McPhee led the rink, scoring a majestic 62 points and take home the chocolates head of Rod Fiedler 41 and Peter Egan 37 points.
The other rink belonged to the in-form Pos Andrea posting a game winning 54 points with husband John Andrea in hot pursuit to finish with 45 points.
Next in line was Steve Peter on 28 points while Natalie McLaughlin failed in the fog to tally a near ten points.
The Scrounge will continue on a Wednesday and Saturday with a 1.30pm start. Hopefully, the foggy conditions will turn into brilliant sunshine.

Rochester Golf Club
Last week, the Rochester Golf Club sadly lost one of its finest, with the passing of life member Bob Knight.
Bob was a dedicated and hard-working member for many years, serving as men's president, committee man and board secretary for a record 20 years.
Who would ever forget those hilarious fine sessions after Saturday golf or his speeches during many of our social nights, acting as M.C.
Bob will be missed by many, in particular his long-time golfing mates and friends, including Bruce, Laurie, Ap, Robert and Tim.
Flags were flown at half-mast, and we raised a toast to honour Bob after Saturday's game.
Our condolences go to Marg and the extended Knight family.
It was only fitting to see Bob's nephew, Murray Schier, emerge from the fog and in very cold conditions to win Saturday's event, with his best score since returning to golf.
Schier shot 77 off the stick to win with a handicap, breaking 40 Stableford points.
Brent Sweeney has been playing well; however, his 39 points were not quite enough to win the major prize.
Jake Wright continues to impress, once again shooting one under 70 for 38 points.
Joining him was Andy Purdy, also on 38 and the next best were Ap Kuiper, Robert Vise, and Les Hedington, all on 36 Stableford points.
Sweeney was closest to the pin on 5, Wright for his 2nd shot to the 9th, and President Hicks for his nice shot to the 18th.
Helen Ingram made a welcome return to golf last Friday by taking out the 9-hole event with a net 37.
Next best in the 9-hole event were Louise Eeles (38) and Kirsty Gebbie (39).
Treasurer Julie Leahy won the 18-hole competition; her net 74 was just enough to beat Louise Williams (77) from Leisa Evans (78).
Williams took out the nearest to the pin on the 3rd, Evans on 5, Leahy on the 8th and Sally Parker was closest for her 2nd shot to the 16th hole.
Heavy fog greeted players all Wednesday morning, with Chris Eeles's inside knowledge of the new hole positions helping him see through the mist to win with 22 Stableford points.
Elmore's Allan Campbell was runner-up after a 3-way countback from Mike Austin and Peter Anderson, all on 20 points.
Austin was closest to the pin on the short 12th hole.
Lockington Golf Club
July 18 – Stableford
Eleven brave souls fronted up on a cold and extremely foggy day and enjoyed hitting the ball out of sight.

Division 1 was won by Trav Mancer with a solid 35 points, on a countback from Kevin Humbert.
Nearest the pins: 3rd – Grant Humbert; 2nd shot 5th – Kevin Humbert, Neil Maddison, Tom Scurrah; 2nd shot 18th for the 6-pack smack – Grant Humbert.
Spike’s Longest Drive on the 6th, sponsored by Hot ‘n’ Cold Plumbing – Kevin Humbert, Trav Mancer, Ron Dixon.
