With just four players currently committed to Northern United’s only cricket team, the Goulburn Murray Cricket club has put out an urgent call for players.
United, formerly Mathoura and Bunnaloo, currently fields a team in the GMC’s B-grade competition, but a mixture of departing players and mid-season commitments have the Goats seeking at least seven players by late July.
And while Northern United’s Adam Thompson said the club was fiscally stable ahead of the 2023-24 season, upcoming governance and administration changes, including the shift from MyCricket to PlayHQ, pose challenges for a club low on numbers.
“We’ve got a few farmers, and when the cropping season comes around they have a few weeks off,” Thompson said.
“The league’s going through a transformation from MyCricket to PlayHQ. To go through that process is a bit of work and we’re trying to work out if we can do that if we’re not going to have a side.”
Based in Bunnaloo, the Goats fielded two teams until the midway point of the 2021-22 season, with numbers also a factor at the time. United won six games in the shortened 2022-23 season.
