Echuca-Moama Squash Club has a dedicated community of players, taking part in competitions and social hits weekly at the courts at Echuca College.
The club has sessions four nights a week, with open practice on Sundays at 10am and Monday nights at 6.30pm.
Tuesdays and Wednesday’s are competition nights, with teams battling on one of those two nights each week.
The club has 60 registered members, with 20 signed on for the latest comp, which began alongside the school term last week.
“It's an all-year sport indoors, and you can play in any weather,” club president Rod Barnes said.
“It's great for fitness. When you're evenly matched, you get a very good workout, and we've got some better players who potentially prolong games to benefit both (players).
“I think from a fitness level, it's considered one of the best (sports).”
Squash is a racquet sport played in a walled court with a hollow rubber ball and stringed racquets.
Players share the court space, returning the ball against the front wall in turn, with the side and back walls also legal surfaces to augment shots or create unique angles.
Transferable skills found in other racquet sports are key, including accurate and powerful ball striking and court coverage.
Although the new competition has just gotten underway, Barnes said the club is always happy to welcome new members into the fold, whether they’ve played squash before or are a complete beginner.
“If they've not played before, but they have good racquet sense and eye hand (co-ordination) there's no reason why they couldn't play,” he said.
“If they have played before and just haven't played for a while, then they'll know what it's all about, it's just a matter of getting down.”
The club can loan equipment for those looking to give the game and try, and new players are encouraged to contact Rod on 0408 815 398, who can confirm the courts will be open for the Sunday or Monday practice.
Players can also reach out to member Marlene Stapleton on 0416 288 767 or by emailing info@echucamoamasquash.club.com.au
The club wished to thank its sponsors, including Moama Bowling Club, which recently funded new hoodies for club members.
