The Barham micro abattoir is now fully operational after it received the green light from the NSW Department of Primary Industries for poultry processing.

This approval comes after the facility completed its final fit-out rectification works following an audit in late 2023.
Murray River Council secured $2.2 million in state and federal funding for the project on behalf of the Murray Plains Meat Cooperative.
As a result, the council took on the role of project manager for the build and currently owns the facility.
The council's Director of Community Economic Development Sarah Ryan said it was exciting to have the abattoir up and running.
“It’s welcome news that the facility can now commence operations,” she said.
“Whilst it’s been a lengthy process to ensure all checks and balances are in place, it’s exciting to now see this project come to life.”
Operators Murray Plains Meat Cooperative will begin with poultry processing initially, before moving towards processing audits for other species.
The multi-species facility, designed to cater to 'paddock-to-plate' producers across the region, was established in response to local abattoir closures.
As per the lease agreement, the council will maintain custodianship of the building for 12 months before handing over ownership to the Murray Plains Meat Cooperative.
