Moama’s Goulburn Murray Women’s and Girls campaigns wrap up on Sunday, August 2, with a finals series to follow, while Echuca United’s last girls’ fixture is set for August 16.
The Moama sides are a lock for finals, the women sitting second with a 9-1 record, while the youth girls are unbeaten leaders with seven wins and a draw, which resulted from an unplayed fixture rather than a tie on the field.
For Moama’s women, who joined the competition as a new side this year, it’s been a great introduction to the senior game under coach Brad Millen.
“The girls are putting in the work and it's showing out on the field,” he said.
“Credit to them, it's them on the field that are making it all happen.”
Shepparton United is the obvious title favourite, a perfect 10-0 and with an eye-watering percentage north of 1000, and the Mowers will need to find a solution to the Demons if they hope to challenge for the flag.
United won the only meeting between the sides 56-6, but that was in round two in April, Millen hoping an increased familiarity among his side will serve it better in future meetings.
“I think now that they've played a fair bit of footy and bonded like they have, I'd like to believe it'll be a more even contest across the field,’’ Millen said.
“They're a quality side Shepparton United, so we've just got to play our brand of footy and hope that we can match their skills.”
The two sides will face off in the penultimate round on July 24, the match an important preview of what seems a likely grand final showdown.
Before that the Mowers’ next game will be at Tatura on Sunday.
In the youth girls, either Shepparton United or Shepparton Swans look the most likely challenger to Moama’s crown, with both clubs still on the schedule in the final month.
The Mowers will battle Cobram this Sunday at Moama.
Echuca United
Echuca United’s girls are looking for an improved back half of the season.
The Eagles’ first year in the Central Victoria Football League hasn’t been as successful on the field as they might have hoped, United having won only two of its 10 fixtures.
With six rounds to play, there is plenty of opportunity for an improved run home, but a top-four finish seems unlikely.
The Eagles’ record is a little harsh compared to their play this season, with three of the side’s six losses coming by 10 points or less.
Echuca United is at White Hills this Sunday, while its next home game is on July 26, taking on Eaglehawk.
